Prolific Australian children’s author Katrina Nannestad is scheduled to appear on Saturday to promote her new book, Rabbit, Soldier, Angel, Thief.
Inspired by a true story about the youngest soldier thought to serve in the Russian army in World War II, the book follows Sasha, a young orphan who joins the Red Army.
“At six years of age, he’s really adopted into the Red Army where he serves for the duration of the war,” she said.
“There actually were a number of children who were with the Red Army during World War II.”
Collins Booksellers owner Helen Sofra said it was the first event the store had hosted since April, when local author Di Walker dropped in between coronavirus lockdowns.
“Like other booksellers, we’ve had so many cancellations of author events during the last 12 months,” she said.
“Prior to that it would have been sometime in 2020.”
It’s also been a while since Ms Nannestad has embarked on book tours.
“My last outing was Book Week two years ago,” she said.
“It’s been a good two years since I’ve been out and about doing book things, so I’m looking forward to that.”
Ms Nannestad’s visit coincides with Greater Shepparton City Council’s Maude St street party to celebrate the completion of the streetscape redevelopment.
Best-selling author Ilsa Evans is also visiting the store to talk about her latest book, The Unusual Abduction of Avery Conifer.
Live music, kids’ activities and a Ferris wheel are all part of the entertainment on Saturday from 9am to noon.
Katrina Nannestad will be at Collins Booksellers from noon on Saturday, November 27, and Ilsa Evans is visiting from 1pm.
