Echuca Moama croquet

By Riverine Herald

Echuca Moama

The club had a good roll up last Friday with 16 members attending.

We have a new member in John Tarrant who is very keen to learn the game and is already showing great improvement every time he takes to the court.

On Friday, John won his three games with an aggregate + 9 hoops also scoring a hoop in one as members played doubles and singles.

On Monday, 16 players braved the weather for an enjoyable day of croquet.

Winner for the day was Trevor Peters with three games and +9 hoops, while Jack Clee was runner-up also with three games and +5.

Trevor and Mavis Peters both scored one jump shot.

It was great to see Rosalyn Smallwood back on the courts after illness and she played extremely well.

Last Thursday, the club visited Rich River for a soup and bun day with Echuca Moama coming away as winners.

Beryl Ash was our champion following a play-off against Russell Smyth.

It was great entertainment watching these two great players battle it out.

Anyone wishing to learn croquet with free lessons please contact John Alstin on 0418 505 614.

Rich River

The croquet courts at Rich River were alive with fun on Thursday of last week when the club held its social soup and bun day.

In all, 56 entries from several NSW and Victorian clubs enjoyed the friendly competition.

The courts were in great condition thanks to the expertise of the Rich River grounds staff.

After two games of doubles the players made their way to the sports lounge at the Rich River Golf Club for lunch, then returned to the courts for two more games.

At the end of four games, Beryl Ash of Echuca Moama and Russ Smyth of Rich River were tied in the lead and played a tie-breaker game of five hoops.

After four hoops the score was two hoops each, and Beryl played the last hoop beautifully to take the win.

Echuca Moama Croquet Club members scored well on the day as members Jan Tracey and John Alstin won both door prizes.

In club play on Tuesday, 15 members played golf croquet singles and a trio.

Three members won all three of their games with Helen Brierley the winner with a nett +14 hoops.

Jay Grant was the runner-up with +12 hoops and Bev Floyd was in third place with +7.

Ian Grant scored two hoops in one, as Helen Brierley and Russ Smyth scored one each.

Visitors and new members are welcome to join golf croquet at Rich River on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with a 10.30am start and lessons can be arranged.

Enquiries can be made to Marjorie Grant on 5480 9985 or Helen Brierley on 0428 307 200.
