In fact it has been close to three decades, with the event last held in Bendigo in 1991.
But Moama’s Heartland raceway will take its moment of history this week, as 46 of the best Super Sedan drivers in the country take to the track to be crowned as the best driver in Australia.
Every reigning state champion will take part in the event, as well as current Australian champion Callum Harper.
He has strong form at Heartland, having claimed the 2018/19 Victorian title at the track just a fortnight ago.
While Harper has the form, the other competitors cannot be easily dismissed.
Harper will have stiff competition from a number of drivers, including former two-time national champion Matty Pascoe, who has had some success in recent weeks as preparation for the race.
While the champions are all at the top of the favourites list, pundits believe that as many as 20 cars will be a genuine shot at claiming the national championship.
Victoria will be represented by 13 drivers, while five racers from NSW will also be on the track.
In addition to the Super Sedans, the production cars will be out in force as the support events of the race.
A practice session will be held tonight at 4pm, with gates opening at 3pm for a 5.30pm start on both Friday and Saturday night’s racing.
