So, just how many have won the race twice.
The answer to that question is eight different boats.
The first boat to do so was Suicide, who won in 1977 and 1978.
It was a third win for drive Len Retallick, who took Suicide II to the win in 1975.
Up next is Rolco.
The Murray Price driven machine claimed the honours in 1986 and 1988.
The next back-to-back winners started their streak the very next year, with the mighty Island Cooler taking the honours in 1989 and 1990, driven by Dennis Rowbottom, and observed by Leo Welch, who could still take Mistress to a second win.
Gotta Be Crazy (1993 and 1996) and God’s Gift (1995 and 1998) would both claim the honours twice in the 1990s.
And then came the dominance of Team Hell.
Hellbent claimed back-to-back wins in 2005 and 2006, and then returned to the podium in 2008.
But it was Hellrazor with all-time record of six wins (02, 10, 11, 12, 13, 15) that has taken the Leigh Johnston Memorial Trophy the most times.
Finally is Merc Force, winners of the 2017 and 2018 races, who will not be returning to defend their title this year.
So the question becomes — who will take the honours this year?
