SHEPPARTON Theatre Arts Group Inc. is incredibly excited to be opening ‘Wicked’ this Friday night, featuring Echuca’s Drew Walker in the key role of Elphaba.
Bringing the Broadway smash hit to the region, ‘Wicked’ tells the incredible untold story of an unlikely but profound friendship between two girls who first meet as sorcery students at Shiz University.
The blonde and popular Glinda and a misunderstood green girl named Elphaba quickly become friends, unlike the story we are so familiar with through The Wizard of Oz.
Following an encounter with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, the girl’s friendship reaches a crossroads and their lives take very different paths.
Glinda’s unflinching desire for popularity sees her seduced by power while Elphaba’s determination to remain true to herself, and to those around her, will have unexpected and shocking consequences for her future.
Their extraordinary adventures in Oz will ultimately see them fulfil their destinies as The Good Witch (Glinda) and The Wicked Witch of the West (Elphaba).
Drew will take to the stage in her welcome return to musical theatre in the iconic role of Elphaba.
Drew has had a four-year break from musical theatre which saw her enter X-Factor in 2013.
Over the next three seasons of the show, Drew found herself advancing to the final Top 10 girls each year.
After this, she moved to Sydney to study Artist Development with JMA Entertainment and worked with Justice Crew on songwriting.
In 2016, she signed with Jim Jordan management agency and travelled to Los Angeles where she sang for Randy Jackson and Universal Music Group.
While overseas, she trained at Millennium Dance Studio LA and with MAX Acting Studio LA.
After returning home, Drew studied acting with New Faces Talent Academy Australia last year.
Previously, Drew took to the stage with Echuca Moama Theatre Company’s junior productions of ‘Camp Rock’ where she played Dana, Peter Pan (which earned her a Georgy Award nomination for singing in the title role) and Pinocchio as the Ring Leader.
‘‘I’m so excited and I couldn’t think of a better show to break my drought with,’’ Drew said.
‘‘From the very first time I heard Wicked I’ve wanted to play the role of Elphaba.
‘‘The role is so rewarding. I’ve never actually played the role of the leading lady before so this is a first for me. It’s a first being green too.
‘‘Some of Broadway’s biggest hits are in this musical and I’m so excited that I get to sing them.
‘‘The audience will be at the edge of their seats with so many “ohhhhh” moments when things tie-in together.
‘‘The performances will leave you amazed with such a strong cast, crew and team.
‘‘You will not be disappointed — this is Broadway quality!’’
‘Wicked’ is a musical not to be missed. Shepparton Theatre Arts Group’s tireless work into this production sees an unbelievable performance from the actors and will stick in your mind for a long time to come.
