With the Timbercutters battling to keep their Picola and District Football League finals’ hopes alive, Farrell rose to the occasion with a standout display against Katamatite on Saturday, complemented by three goals.
Unfortunately, his efforts were not enough as Mathoura fell to a third consecutive defeat as their top eight dream hangs by a thread.
‘‘Amos is an absolute champion,’’ coach Darcy Robinson said.
‘‘We’re extremely lucky and proud to have him as a leader of our football club.
‘‘He brings a lot of experience from a winning culture which he hopes to pass onto the young blokes.
‘‘Even off the field he is playing a big role in shaping the future of this playing group.’’
Final score, Katamatite 16.12 (108) to Mathoura 13.4 (82).
Against the Tigers, Mathoura once again put themselves in a strong position for an unlikely victory — only to undo their hard work in the final term.
‘‘We’re probably relaxing because we tend to think we’ve done enough,’’ Robinson said.
‘‘It all comes back to the inexperience we have in the senior ranks and the journey we are on together.
‘‘We’ve spoken about taking the final step at length but at the moment it just isn’t getting through.’’
Despite having just three wins to their name for the year, the Timbercutters remain an outside hope of featuring in finals action.
And Robinson says his side can finish the home and away season strongly.
‘‘Our own inconsistency has put us in this position. But while we are still a chance we aren’t going to give up hope. Our best is good enough to trouble any team in the competition,’’ he said.
Mathoura goals: A Farrell 3, D Russell 2, J Flynn 2, J McGowan 2, S McHale, J Ellery, B Worsnop and D Robinson. Best were Farrell, J Hughes, Worsnop, S Eddy, Flynn and J Pridham.
