Golfing success continues

By Deniliquin Pastoral Times

As we move through autumn and into winter the golfing action continues at the Deniliquin Golf Club with weekly events and special tournaments.

The continued resurgence in golf is making Deniliquin Golf Club one of the most successful sporting organisations in the region.

It’s a trend that should continue over the autumn and winter months.

The golf course is in superb condition and as well as attracting many visitors, especially from Victoria, it is becoming the number one sporting venue for lots of locals.

Over the coming months there will be a host of golfing events to keep avid golfers busy.

In May there will be the popular Corporate Fundraiser Day on Friday, May 10, followed closely by the IGA Deniliquin Open on Sunday, May 12.

One of the most popular events each year is the Winter Classic, played over the June Queen’s Birthday holiday weekend. This is a 36 hole fourball best ball stableford.

Details of all golfing events can be found under the tournaments tab on the clubs website, or by calling the pro shop on (03)58813333.

In the longer term, events to keep in mind are the Spring Classic — also a fourball best ball format over 36 holes — and the Veterans Week of Golf from October 7 to 11.

By modern standards the Deniliquin golf course is not long — 5817 metre par 72 for men, and 5118 metre par 72 for ladies.

However, the course is a challenge for all level of players.

Poor shots will find the huge trees which line most fairways, or the abundant water holes scattered around the course.

The Deniliquin Golf Club is also renowned for its friendly atmosphere, especially in the clubhouse.

This is never more evident than on Friday nights, when there are meat raffles and meals available.

Ticket selling starts at 6pm and the draws are from 7.30pm. Happy hour is every Friday night from 6pm to 7pm.

If you are a novice golfer, the golf club holds clinics for adult learners, as well as juniors. Check at the pro shop if you want to know when the next clinics will be held.

If you haven’t enjoyed the great outdoors in a delightful bush setting at Deniliquin Golf Club, this winter is a great time to get started. Regular events each week include competitions on Saturday (medley), Wednesday (mens) and Thursday (ladies). There are also other nine hole competitions. Visit the pro shop, which is open every day, to learn more about what’s happening.
