The action never stops at the Deniliquin Bowling Club.
It may technically be ‘off-season’ for pennant bowls, but there’s still plenty on offer at the popular local club during the cooler months.
The club has something for everyone, including mixed social bowls which is held every Saturday afternoon during the winter.
‘‘Social bowls is great fun and a good way to get together,’’ club committee member Tom Todd said.
‘‘The Wednesday social bowls over summer was well supported so hopefully we can get good numbers in winter too.
‘‘Bowlers of all levels of experience are welcome to come down for a roll.
‘‘We like to put new bowlers in the same team as the experienced players to help them out.’’
The club hosts several annual tournaments mid-year, including the Winter Invitation Classic Pairs in August.
This popular event attracts class bowlers from all over Australia, with invitations sent out to bowlers who have achieved high credentials on the greens during their careers.
The Classic Pairs will take place on August 3 and 4, with the singles knockout on August 2.
‘‘The Classic Pairs is recognised as one of the biggest tournaments throughout Australia,’’ Todd said.
‘‘We’re expecting close to 200 bowlers again this year so it should be a great weekend.’’
The club is holding the Hens & Roosters mixed tournament on June 1 and 2, and an Open Four-A-Side Medley on June 29 and 30. The Rams & Ewes Mixed Pairs on March 31 and April 1.
Also on the winter schedule is Deniliquin Bowling Club’s Open Premier Fours, to be held August 31 and September 1.
The club also boasts a popular Asian restaurant, dishing up classic Chinese and Thai meals from 6pm six days a week (closed Mondays).
On Sunday evenings there is an ‘all-you-can-eat’ smorgasbord for $20, while lunch is available Wednesday through to Sunday from 11.30am to 2pm with $12 specials on offer. Takeaway meals are also available.
Members’ draws are held at the club on Friday nights, along with the meat and veggie raffles.
