Crowd gathers for historical cup tour

About 70 people attended the Melbourne Cup tour Historical Connections reception event at the Deniliquin Historical Society on Friday night.

Guests were treated to finger foods, a grazing table and refreshments as stories were shared about the history of horse racing in Deniliquin.

Special guest of the evening was cup ambassador and 2001 Melbourne Cup winning trainer Sheila Laxon, who spoke to the crowd about how her cup win changed her life.

Victoria Racing Club racing engagements and cup tour manager Joe McGrath told stories about the time he spent with Deniliquin horse racing legend Roy Higgins.

Guests also took the opportunity to hold the coveted 18-carat gold Melbourne Cup.
