Deniliquin footballer Sam Lloyd had an outstanding first game for the Western Bulldogs in his season opener.

The decision to debut the Thor-inspired guernsey by the team was perfect timing, with Aussie actor and Bulldogs fan Chris Hemsworth — who has played Thor in several big-screen blockbusters — in Saturday’s crowd.
Joining him for the game was Hollywood pal Matt Damon, cheering on the Dogs at Marvel Stadium.
With the game still on the line it was Lloyd who played the role as the hero, with the former 2011 Deni Rams premiership player’s second major for the game sealing a 17 point win over a fast finishing Sydney Swans outfit.
Danger extension
Prevailing dry weather conditions forced the Southern Border team to extend the Bush Fire Danger Period.
It announced last week that in the local government areas of Albury City, Greater Hume, Federation, and Berrigan Councils the period will extend to April 30 instead of ending on March 31.
The Mid-Murray RFS, based in Deniliquin, has said there would be no such expansion in its area, covering the Edward River, Murray River and parts of Murrumbidgee council areas.
Coming into the school holidays and Easter period, members of the public are urged to check local conditions and rules around the use of fire and should contact local councils to check on rules around burning in their local areas.
RFS ready to move
Still on the Mid-Murray RFS, its team is expected to move in to the new Deniliquin Fire Control Centre at Deniliquin Airport in less than a month.
District Officer Phil Brunsdon said the long awaited move is seven months overdue.
‘‘They (the contractors) are pretty close from what I have seen, and most of the furniture is in,’’ he said.
‘‘We are currently looking at being in by April 15 but that could still change.’’
Construction of the $4.39 million facility was awarded to the local company Decentralised Demountables Pty Ltd. which also built the Deniliquin RFS brigade station in 2011.
Hawkins joy
It was a big week for the Hawkins family last week.
Former Deniliquin resident Emma and her husband Tom Hawkins, who is originally from Finley, welcomed a new daughter.
Primrose Grace Hawkins was born on Wednesday, providing two year-old Arabella her first sibling.
Emma took to social media on Thursday to welcome ‘Mimi’, saying they already love her so much.
The big week of celebration didn’t end there however, with Tom making history on the footy field.
In the Geelong Cats’ season opener against Collingwood at the MCG on Friday night, Tom became the 60th player in AFL history to reach 500 career goals.
The Cats’ key forward needed two goals to bring up the milestone, with his first goal coming at the 10 minute mark of the second quarter.
Hawkins celebrated this goal with a tribute to his newborn daughter, motioning a baby rocking in his arms after the six-pointer.
It was his milestone goal that would prove the highlight of the night however, with Hawkins snapping the ball on the run from about 40m out for what was the match-winning goal for Geelong.
North turns blue
Deniliquin North Public School recently hosted their ‘Wear Something Blue and a BBQ too’ fundraising day for BeyondBlue.
Statistics around mental health and young people resonated with the SRC at Deniliquin North which inspired it to arrange a fundraiser.
The SRC held a free sausage sizzle and then with staff support the Year 5 and 6 students led rotating peer support activities in the afternoon.
The activities all related to improving stress and relieving anxiety and included planting, making stress balls, posters, worry dolls, play-dough, yoga, circus skills and team sports.
Students were encouraged to wear something blue and bring a gold coin donation with students raising about $220 for the Beyond Blue foundation.
