This year will mark the 14th Jerilderie Working Dog Auctions and organisers are hoping for another big one.
In 2018 ‘Coopendale Charlie’ sold for an Australian record of $14,000, surpassing the record set only 20 minutes earlier of ‘Nomak Delta’ for $13,475.
Jerilderie Working Dog Auctions co-organiser Warwick Doolan said as a result, this year’s event had already attracted a quality range of dogs.
‘‘The quality is better than last year.
‘‘As we’ve been able to grow the auction we’ve been able to attract the high end vendors from across the country.
‘‘It would be ideal to break last year’s record, but the dry conditions might not suit.’’
In the past few years many sales records have been broken at Jerilderie, and Mr Doolan said the organisers are making it easier for the vendor and buyer.
‘‘We scrutinise the vendors and quality of dog to ensure it fits the buyer.
‘‘We aim to try and match a buyer with a particular dog and offer advice to what will work.’’
Mr Doolan added the working dog auction was an important event to the local community.
‘‘It attracts about 500 people to town so the pubs, service stations and motels can all benefit from that influx of people.
‘‘Three clubs — Lions, Apex and MAKATAK — all receive a cash injection from the day and that goes back into the community.’’
A maximum number of 60 dogs will be on offer at auction, on February 24 at the Jerilderie Racecourse.
