The Roos were outmatched by a vastly improved Rovers team on Saturday, as Wangaratta had the game all but wrapped up at the main break, leading by 53 points. The Roos showed fight out of halftime, tacking on 4 straight goals to cut the deficit to 36 points, but the Rovers asserted their dominance in the final term to walk away with a 62 point victory.

The Rovers looked like a much improved team compared to last year, as they continued their good form shown in the first half of their game against Albury last week by taking the game away from the Roos in the first half. It only took 20 seconds for the Rovers to kick truly while the Roos again squandered opportunities to score.
The Roos, who have been hampered by injuries, were able to get players back in the lineup and move players to their natural positions. Both Gus Lingham and Joe Hansen started in defence, while Shane Tregear went to the midfield and Jack Bates to the attacking goal square. Tregear looks as though he’s feeling more settled and had a real impact on the game.
Although the Roos had a number of very good players, the Rovers appeared to have a more even spread of winners on the day, especially in key positions. Andrew Pretto and Jack Schilg were efficient with the ball while Jamie Seymour and Billy Raggett worked tirelessly. It was when Tyler Spencer and Joe Hansen got the ball in their hands, things just seem to happen with their ability to open up the game with their fast play.
Matt Wilson forced his way into the senior squad for the first time this year and put in a solid performance with two goals to his name. Hayden Filliponi came to life in the third quarter with three goals, two of which came from one forward foray after being awarded a second shot from 40m before the ball was returned to the centre. It was an even score line after half time, but the horse had already bolted.
This Saturday the Roos will be hungry for success when they take on North Albury at John Foord Oval. The Easter game always draws a bumper crowd and with a fine and sunny day forecasted, it’s a great opportunity to support the club.

Reserves
In a game that lacked many highlights, the play of the day was when the Montgomery boys teamed up with a coast to coast play that was capped off by Shane Manning with the first of his two goals for the day.
Harley Ralph and James Tanner were both busy as usual but the Rovers just had too many options up forward to cap off a strong win, rarely missing a set shot.
Sam Severin put in his best game for the club while Beau Schilg certainly appears on the improve. Pete Whyte, Beau Damm and the Kuschert brothers both gave it their all but the more polished Rovers were always in control of the outcome.
Final Scores: Corowa Rutherglen 3.3.21 v Wang Rovers 20.17.137
Goals: S. Manning 2, B. Damm.

Thirds
The Rovers jumped the Roos in the first quarter to take a 25 point lead and despite the Roos matching the Rovers in the second, they somehow managed to outscore a determined Roos outfit in the second half.
From outside the boundary, it appeared that the intensity and cohesion displayed last week was not quite as evident against the Rovers. Although the Rovers appeared to have a match-winning lead coming into the final term, to their credit the Roos upped the ante and continued to surge forward but with little reward. Players such as Mac Lavis, Kaelen Bradtke, Caleb Kuschert, Cal Spencer and Bailey Minogue, to name a few, refused to surrender, but the margin was too great to overcome.
Darcy Melksham and Jordan Eyers were the main goal scorers for the Roos, but the Rovers tall forwards made it a tough day for the Roos defence.
Final Scores: Corowa Rutherglen 5.6.36 v Wang Rovers 11.14.80
Goals: D. Melksham 2, J. Eyers 2, M. Lavis
Sponsor Awards: B. Minogue, D. Melksham, C. Kuschert, C. Spencer, M. Lavis
Coach’s Award: J. Eyers

Roo’s Easter weekend match
President Graham Hosier has urged supporters to come down to John Foord oval this Easter Saturday, as the Roo’s clash with North Albury. It’s likely to be a dog fight as both clubs look to notch their first win of the season.
“Come down to John Foord oval for what looks to be a great match-up,” Graham said.
“Easter Saturday is an important day for the club and hopefully we can get our first win in front of a spirited crowd,” Graham said.
Meanwhile, the netballers are coming off a strong win against the Rovers over the weekend as they look to build off their good form early in the season and extend their win streak to 4 games.
“A lot of hard work has gone into building a strong netball side over the past few years and early signs are looking positive,” Hosier said.
“But North Albury has always been a power-house in the Ovens and Murray netball, so expect a very entertaining game.”
