Those pushing for a new expanded war memorial for Mooroopna should be commended for their efforts.
A newly revamped site will have several key benefits.
But of these, clearly the most poignant is it will ensure the facility can adequately commemorate all those from the town that served for Australia.
According to those involved, the memorial and interest in attending the town’s Anzac Day ceremonies is slowly outgrowing the site.
But the plans will also provide a beautified section of parkland in the Mooroopna township ideal for recreation.
While it was unfortunate the project was unsuccessful in a recent Victorian Government grant application, other efforts to raise funds are afoot, and designs have been drawn up.
At this point, project proponents have raised $40000 from the community, secured a $20000 commitment from Greater Shepparton City Council, contingent on other funding being forthcoming.
They are now seeking $80000 from the State Government and need a further $60000 from other sources. We wish them luck in their fundraising activities for an important community project.
Efforts to see the development realised are to be applauded and we hope the community can in years to come spend Anzac Day at a site that better commemorates those who served from the town.
