When local music duo Shane + the Wong Brother formed in late 2017, members Shane Muir and Ken Wong had not played together in public for more than 20 years.
Since then, the duo has played more than 80 gigs across the Goulburn and Murray valleys, including live on local ABC and ONE FM radio and as far afield as Geelong and Federation Square in Melbourne for the Shepp Square project.
The duo was recently booked as the support gig for Australian music icon Ross Wilson’s show at one of the Murray River’s premier entertainment venues, The Jam Bar at Barooga Sports Club.
Singer and rhythm guitarist Wong said the success had been beyond their wildest expectations and they were thrilled to be offered the support.
‘‘We have played at Sporties a few times now and had good feedback from management, but we were certainly very excited to be offered the gig with Ross Wilson,’’ he said.
‘‘When we started playing together we expected we might get one or two gigs a month and have some fun playing the music we love from the 60s 70s, 80s and beyond, but it has really taken off.’’
By a strange twist of fate, the duo supported Wilson’s band Mondo Rock twice in the 1980s when they were part of local original band Chinese Cooking.
Promotion for the event on the Sporties website describes the pair as local legends.
●Shane + the Wong Brother will perform as support act to Ross Wilson at The Jam Bar at Barooga Sports Club on Saturday, February 23. Entry is free. For information on gigs, phone Ken Wong on 0419 570 846 or visit www.facebook.com/shaneandthewongbrother/
