FLC leading teacher Brad Hearn said the classes had long-term benefits to students.
‘‘It’s something we do with the help of Primal Health,’’ Mr Hearn said.
‘‘Their yoga instructor Mark Blyss comes every Thursday and does a class with our students.
‘‘Yoga has a range of benefits.
‘‘It gives students those strategies of self-control, self-awareness, and allows them to start processing some of the thoughts that are going through their heads.
‘‘I think it helps them get a better sense of an understanding of who they are both physically and mentally.’’
FLC has been running the program for almost four years and Mr Hearn said they hoped it would continue long into the future.
‘‘It originally started as part of our healthy eating and living program, which is sponsored by Tomorrow Today,’’ Mr Hearn said.
‘‘As it’s in partnership with Primal Health students go to the gym once a week, and also have yoga once a week — so it’s part of our health and PE program.
‘‘We hope to keep the program going because to get those fine motor-skills that are required for things like writing you really need to grow them first.
‘‘And yoga and the gym are a great way to socially interact with others, especially for those kids who aren’t interacting regularly in a social capacity.
‘‘It also gives them a great opportunity to improve their health and fitness.’’
