The film follows Laura on her travels from Argentina to her sister’s wedding, bringing her two children along for the occasion.
Amid the celebrations the eldest daughter is abducted. In the intense days that follow various family and community tensions surface and deeply hidden secrets are revealed.
This is superb and sensitive filmmaking with a subtle and satisfying ending.
The second film in the double bill stars Isabelle Huppert in a superb performance in the chilling potboiler, Greta (MA15+).
Frances finds a handbag on the New York subway and returns it to Greta, an eccentric French piano teacher.
Having recently lost her mum, young Frances strikes up a seemingly harmless friendship with the lonely widow, until Greta’s behaviour becomes erratic and obsessive.
This is a nail-biting, psychological thriller, not to be watched alone. The double feature will screen on Saturday, June 22, at 6pm and Sunday, June 23, at 5pm.
Screening on June 29 and 30 is a brilliant Danish film with a breathtaking twist, The Guilty (M).
When police officer Asger Holm is demoted to desk work, he expects a quiet time. That all changes when he answers a panicked phone call from a kidnapped woman who disconnects abruptly.
Every bit of his intuition and skill is required for the search for the missing woman and her assailant. With limited images, but telling sounds and dialogue, The Guilty creates a unique movie inside each of our heads.
Screening second in the double bill is the British film, Spitfire (PG). This is the story of an aeroplane that was forged in competition, shaped as the war clouds gathered and refined in the white heat of combat — going on to become the most famous fighter plane ever made.
The story is told in the words of the last surviving combat veterans with stunning aerial footage and remastered archive footage.
There will be a single feature Sunday afternoon matinee of Spitfire (PG) at 1.30pm. The tickets of just $10 include afternoon tea after the screening.
