Nine locals got together last week to have a yarn, and create some high-quality knitwear as part of the celebrations.
Worldwide Knit in Public Day was started in 2005 by Danielle Landes, as a way for knitters to come together and enjoy each others’ company.
Benalla’s Alice Crichton had taken part in several events when she lived in Melbourne and decided to bring the event to her new home town.
‘‘I’m from Melbourne and there are a lot of groups down there which take part,’’ Ms Crichton said.
‘‘We moved here about three years ago and I started an evening knitting group on Thursdays.
‘‘World Knit in Public Day is an international day where knitters take their work out in public.
‘‘We publish on social media to show we have been out to encourage more knitters to join in.
‘‘And it’s nice to talk to, and meet, other knitters in town. It’s a great opportunity to get to know each other.’’
Ms Crichton said they celebrated the day in style and even had the opportunity to work with some yarn one of the members had brought over from the Shetland Isles.
‘‘She had a trip over to Scotland last year and brought back a whole lot of yarn. She has made an amazing lace shawl from it. It’s very impressive,’’ Ms Crichton said.
The group made sure they celebrated for the whole day with a tour of some of their favourite local cafes.
‘‘So we started at 10am in One Wild Apple and at 11.30 we moved over to Rustik,’’ she said.
‘‘It was nice to meet some more local knitters. There were nine of us, but I didn’t have much time to arrange it and I hope we can get a few more along next year.’’
The group is just one local knitting club who will be taking part in this year’ yarn bombing, which will be happening in August.
Keep an eye out in The Ensign for details on that.
