Recently Cooinda Volunteers completed ‘‘Bridging the Gap’’ experiential training with dance movement therapist and Memory Bridge dementia-specific sessions facilitator Maeve Larkin.
The training, developed by American dance movement therapists Donna Newman-Bluestein and Meg H. Chang, incorporates discussion, self-reflection and movement that focuses on developing sensitivity to non-verbal communication.
Bridging the Gap trainee Kaye Roberts said the training had been extremely beneficial.
‘‘I have found it enhances your ability to communicate with your whole being and not just your head,’’ Ms Roberts said.
‘‘Bridging the Gap has created a greater awareness and mindfulness engagement with people living with dementia. It has helped me develop sensitivity to non-verbal cues, self-awareness and empathy.’’
