Young people in Benalla will have greater opportunities to learn to drive after the Victorian Government announced the successful Learner Driver Mentor Program (L2P) will continue for another four years.

The program, which is supported by Benalla Rural City Council and has proved successful in the region, helps learner drivers who do not have access to a supervising driver or vehicle gain the required driving experience they need to apply for a probationary licence.
The state government will invest a further $33.4 million into the program, which is free for Victorians aged between 16 and 21 who meet the necessary requirements.
During the past 10 years, the program has helped more than 5000 young drivers get their probationary license.
‘‘Having a licence means its easier to get to work or school, and we think every young person should have these opportunities,’’ Roads and Road Safety Minister Jaala Pulford said.
Ms Pulford also said the program ‘‘makes roads safer,’’ as it reduces the number of unlicensed drivers on the road.
Furthermore, the Transport Accident Commission has also rebooted DriveSmart, an online training tool for learner drivers to practice safe driving skills.
