The fundraiser, which is Foodbank’s corporate cycling challenge, set off from Beechworth on Saturday.
It is a one-day event that travelled through Mt Buffalo and Mt Stanley before returning to Beechworth later in the afternoon.
With one in five children going hungry each year, the ride is raising funds to feed vulnerable Victorian children and their families.
Riders stopped at Myrtleford’s Rotary Park where event sponsor JAZZ Apple distributed free apples to members of the public.
This year riders from corporate teams included Peters Ice Cream, Port of Melbourne, the West Gate Tunnel Project, JAZZ Apple and Foodbank Victoria, all taking part on the gruelling 172km route.
Speaking in the lead up to the event Mr Cooke said because of the terrain it would be a tough ride, but one he was looking forward to.
‘‘Having grown up in Benalla, I’m a huge fan of Victoria’s High Country and I’m really excited to take on Buffalo again,’’ he said.
‘‘Last year’s Hunger Ride was a sensational event. It was great to see the riders challenge themselves to make the distance in hot conditions and raise much-needed funds for Foodbank.’’
Ray Montague, managing director of ride sponsor Montague, said he was happy to be involved.
‘‘We are thrilled to support the Hunger Ride through our premium JAZZ Apple brand and we will continue our support of Foodbank’s important work,’’ he said.
‘‘As a family business producing quality Australian fruit, assisting those in the community impacted by food insecurity aligns strongly with our values.’’
Foodbank Victoria chief executive officer Dave McNamara said the inaugural Hunger Ride, which was held in 2018, raised $60000.
‘‘Every dollar donated helps us to provide two meals,’’ Mr McNamara said.
‘‘Across the state our charity partners are reporting increased demand for food relief.
‘‘While we’re helping to feed more than 116000 Victorians every month, we know more than 12000 people seeking food can’t be assisted.
‘‘Initiatives like the Hunger Ride are trying to bridge the gap between supply and demand.’’
Foodbank distributed more than sixmillion kilograms of food last financial year to its 400 charity partners across Victoria.
