The spread of QFF poses a serious threat to the region’s horticulture industry and domestic and international trade opportunities.
This pest is found in most parts of Victoria, including Benalla Rural City, and hinders commercial fruit production as well as home orchards and garden enthusiasts.
Rotary Benalla’s Bruce Walker said we all had a role to play in the control of QFF.
‘‘Community awareness and increased knowledge of integrated management measures are imperative in protecting our region,’’ Mr Walker said.
‘‘Benalla Rotary has been able to secure a grant from Rotary District 9790, which has enabled us to gain much-needed support from the Goulburn Murray Valley QFF Community Control Program.
‘‘This support will take the form of information pamphlets, signage to create awareness and speakers for community forums,’’ Mr Walker said.
‘‘It will also enhance our chances of gaining further support by way of the Victorian Government’s Managing Fruit Fly Regional Grants Program making it easier to continue the program on a long-term basis.’’
