The Mid Murray Rural Fire Service is urging landholders to take extra care with their hay, after a fire caused almost $100,000 worth of damage at Pine Lea earlier this month.
The first of the hay stack fires reported this season, Inspector Doug Adamson said more can hopefully be avoided.
Up to 200 tonnes of Hay was lost in that Pine Lea fire on October 1, which took five days to burn out. The shed the hay was stored in was also lost.
‘‘In that case the roof was damaged and the rain got in, causing combustion,’’ Insp Adamson said.
‘‘There is a lot of hay on the ground now and, because of the rain, we remind landholders that it should be left in the paddock to dry out completely before being stored.’’
