Agriculture Victoria senior irrigation extension officer Rob O’Connor said the webinar had been designed primarily for irrigators, but also for service providers who assisted irrigators with their water trading decision-making.
“The content is based largely on irrigator feedback, who have said they would like to know what the water market is likely to do in the future so they can make better farm business decisions now,” he said.
“The webinar will provide estimates of future southern Murray-Darling Basin water allocation prices, based on expert insights and detailed modelling of the key drivers of the water market.”
Mr O’Connor said information would be presented to assist irrigators to better prepare their farm businesses for the future.
Key drivers of the water market and future scenarios will be discussed, including climate change and its impact on irrigation water availability, changing land and water use in the connected basin, including horticultural expansion, the Commonwealth water buyback and inter-valley trade limits.
Expert speakers include Aither founding director Chris Olszak and Aither principal consultant Erin Smith.
Aither recently produced a detailed report titled Southern Murray-Darling Basin Water Market - Recent and Future Trends and Drivers, for the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP).
Some of the findings from this report will be discussed in the webinar.
