Toolamba Bridge is currently closed to all traffic at Newnham Road and Wren Street, Toolamba.
The bridge has been deemed unsafe for travel due to significant deterioration of the piers which was discovered during preliminary works today.
Council has now closed the bridge immediately to allow the contractors to commence repair works.
Greater Shepparton City Council director infrastructure Phil Hoare said council contacted local schools and emergency services to ensure they were aware of the closure and that appropriate arrangements were in place this afternoon.
“Council has also installed detour signs directing motorists to alternate routes," he said.
"At this stage the bridge will remain closed until works are completed in mid-November."
Contractors began works on the bridge last week, which is set to be closed for 18 weeks.
Council will provide regular updates via it's website, however if further specific information is required, please contact Council’s Projects department on 03 5832 9535.
