Rita Fochi, 51, appeared in Shepparton Magistrates’ Court on Friday, having been charged with intentionally causing injury, recklessly causing injury, assaulting police, resisting police, and unlawful assault.
Documents released by the court to The News showed the alleged assault occurred on May 12 when police responded to a dispute between Ms Fochi and another woman.
Checks revealed that Ms Fochi was subject to an outstanding warrant, and one of the five police officers tasked with attending the altercation arrested and handcuffed the woman.
Police allege Ms Fochi then became aggressive and started yelling and screaming at police, before dropping to the ground and refusing to walk.
The officers then carried the woman to where a divisional van was parked — at which time police allege Ms Fochi bit the right arm of a policewoman.
Police said this caused the officer great pain and that she screamed in agony as the woman refused to stop biting into her arm.
The documents show another police officer used force to stop the alleged biting attack, and Ms Fochi was taken to Shepparton police station.
The policewoman sustained bruising and cuts to her right arm as a result of the alleged assault, with visible redness in the area which required medical attention.
Ms Fochi’s defense counsel Kate Martin requested a four-week adjournment in the matter, and police prosecutor Liam Murdoch did not object to it.
Magistrate David Faram continued the woman’s bail and ordered her to reappear in court on July 12.
