You could hang around in a butcher’s shop where meat counters and cold stores keep things nice and chilled.
Shepparton’s Luke’s Magic Meats owner-manager Brad Wootton reckons he has a near-perfect summer job.
‘‘You can’t beat it,’’ he said.
‘‘But maybe a pub would be better.’’
But all good things come to an end and, at 6.30pm, he has to go home.
‘‘That’s when it hits ya,’’ he said.
Mr Wootton said when it was hot, customers arrived either early or late in the day to escape the heat — and the most popular buys were barbecue cuts or stir fry.
‘‘Something nice and easy,’’ he said.
Mr Wootton has worked at the Vaughan St store for 14 years and said the worst summer day he had ever experienced was the weekend of the Black Saturday fires on February 7, 2009.
‘‘It was just so hot and for such a long time,’’ he said.
The store’s air-conditioning is on 24 hours a day.
‘‘You’ve got to have nice cold shop for the customers,’’ he said.
