Emergency services were called to a house fire that claimed the life of a man at Marungi near Shepparton at 5.54 am today.
Two men were home at the time.
A man, who is yet to be formally identified, died at the scene.
The second man, aged in his 60s, received minor injuries.
CFA District 22 operations manager Tony Owen said upon arrival 80 to 90 per cent of the structure was involved in the fire.
He said seven trucks attended and it took 35 to 40 men to control the fire in 20 to 25 minutes.
Cobram Police Detective Senior Constable Paul Campbell said the Arson Squad, Forensics and CFA fire investigators were on scene to investigate the cause of the fire.
