Electric show

Featuring 22 of the pop group ABBA’s greatest hits, new production Mamma Mia! The Musical will hit the stage in Melbourne next month.

Produced by Australians Michael Coppel, Louise Withers and Linda Bewick, the global musical phenomenon is set on a Greek island and is inspired by the story-telling of ABBA’s songs.

On the eve of her wedding, a young woman’s quest to discover the identity of her father brings three men from her mother’s past back to the island they last visited 20 years ago.

Australian actor Ian Stenlake plays one of the men — Sam Carmichael.

After more than 26 years in the industry, Mr Stenlake said this had been one of the best shows to perform in terms of audience morale.

‘‘The music is what glues the show together,’’ he said.

Getting to perform ABBA’s hit song Knowing Me, Knowing You was one of Mr Stenlake’s on-stage highlights.

‘‘The ensemble have been a powerhouse too; it’s a very electric show.’’

Producer Louise Withers said Mamma Mia! was a joyful experience.

‘‘The timeless tracks of ABBA never fail to bring joy to audiences across the world,’’ she said.

‘‘We are thrilled with the incredibly talented creative team and cast we have assembled to bring this story and these songs to life on stage night after night.’’

The Melbourne season of Mamma Mia! starts on July 10 at the Princess Theatre and runs until early October.
