Vogel impresses in Adelaide

By Cobram Courier

Cobram-Barooga golfer Steffi Vogel’s fledgling career in the sport continues to go from strength to strength.

Last month she represented Victoria at Glenelg Golf Club in Adelaide and was her state’s best performer in the amateur Team Championships, where the best six golfers from each state played against one another.

Vogel said the challenging course made her level of performance all the more pleasing.

‘‘The course was really enjoyable,’’ she said.

‘‘It was very long. We played off the men’s back tees, so it was something a bit different to what we are used to. So it was definitely hard but the course was amazing.’’

Vogel had to adapt her game to suit the course, with the 19-year-old having to use a lot of woods instead of irons which she is more familiar with.

One advantage of having to make longer shots was the fact Vogel avoided hitting the bunkers.

She said the girls who were bigger hitters were frustratingly finding themselves in the sand a lot more than her.

This is not the first time the teen sensation has represented Victoria and she stood up to the higher level of golf spectacularly, winning four out of her five matches.

Vogel was selected for her state after a strong run of performances in national-ranking amateur events throughout the year.

The young gun is certainly leading a busy life as she strives to make it to professional ranks.

She plays every weekend in Melbourne and finds herself in a different town almost every week.

The travel does not bother her any more as she is so accustomed to it and enjoys the tournaments so much that it is merely an afterthought.

As well as trying to play golf as much as she can, she also works at the Tocumwal Golf and Bowls Club.

As she has progressed with her skill set, it has become a challenge to continually improve her game.

‘‘Definitely when I first started playing the game it came very naturally to me, but now I have to try and train really hard to get better,’’ Vogel said.

‘‘But Dad (Terry) was one heck of a golfer, so he gives me a lot of help.’’

Vogel also receives regular coaching and sound advice from professional Justin Speirani, who works at the club.

With those tools at her disposal, the sky is the limit for one of Cobram-Barooga’s best young sporting talents.
