Locals are being encouraged to think pink for the first ever Mother’s Day Classic in Girgarre.
In support of the National Breast Cancer Foundation, everyone is invited along to walk 4km to support a cause that is likely to strike a chord.
‘‘I decided to start the event because I was personally affected by cancer,’’ organiser Sandy Fletcher said.
‘‘I have a cousin who was diagnosed last year at 41, she fought it and recovered, but it doesn’t matter what age, women young and old are suffering and it’s not fair.
‘‘It started off as a personal story but I know at least 10 women in Girgarre who have been affected and I thought this is the best way to raise money and raise awareness — I want to do something but I don’t have thousands of dollars to donate.”
Kezia Talbot at the Community Cottage said the decision to help out was a simple one.
‘‘There’s two sides to this — initially I thought it was a good idea for the Cottage to get behind the event in any way we could,’’ she said.
‘‘But there’s also a personal reason: I was diagnosed at 39 so it’s a cause close to my heart.’’
Being the inaugural event, Ms Fletcher and Ms Talbot aren’t too sure what to expect but say they have big plans for the coming years.
‘‘We want as many as possible on the day, but if we have 30 people turn up that would be fantastic,’’ Ms Talbot said.
‘‘We’ll be looking to grow the event and the course eventually; we’re hoping to have a longer course so that we can offer people a chance to run too,’’ Ms Fletcher said.
It hasn’t taken long for local businesses to offer to help out either and Ms Fletcher said they’re grateful to anyone who contributes.
‘‘We just want to say a huge thank you to the local garage, Forbes and Somers, for being a major sponsor as well as Ky Hire and Batteries, who donated the balloons for the day,’’ she said.
‘‘We appreciate all their support and encourage everyone to come and walk.’’
Merchandise will be available on the day for a donation as well as free tribute cards to wear.
Registration on the day begins at 7.30am on May 13 at the cenotaph on Station St, Girgarre for an 8.30am start.
