Benalla Saints’ women’s football team is back on the winners’ list recording a five-goal victory over Kerang at the Benalla Showgrounds on Sunday.
Seven goals from dangerous forward Kelsie Piscioneri spearheaded the Saints’ performance, as they made it three wins from four matches this season.
Leading by 14 points at quarter time, the Saints extended their lead at every change. The final score Benalla 8.11 (59) d. Kerang 4.5 (29).
While Piscioneri was doing damage in the forward line, young Brittany Button was repelling everything off half back, the fleet-footed defender breaking the game open with a number stunning runs down the ground.
Fiona Powles playing in the ruck gave the onballers first use of the ball, while Jayde Burden, Donna Beckley and Beth Lewis were all great contributors.
Ally Reid and Gorgia Spinks once again won plenty of contested football.
Honnie Lowe kicked her first goal of the season after marking strongly deep in the forward line.
Co-coach Kylie Relf was pleased with her side’s performance and its focus on ‘‘team first’’ football.
‘‘We needed to rebound strongly after our loss to Mooroopna,’’ Relf said.
‘‘I thought our defenders did a great job under pressure, while we won the centre clearances.
‘‘Kelsie is having an unbelievable season, and her seven goals contributed to a great win over a good side.’’
This Sunday the Saints take on Shepparton Bears who are on top of the ladder, undefeated from their three matches.
