The Northerners entered the second day of their Haisman Shield contest against Katandra with their backs firmly pressed to the wall, but against all odds managed to snare 8-47 to claim success and a crucial six points.
It makes the Jets certain finalists ahead of the last round of regular season action — that begins tomorrow when Old Students come to town — but Mitch Brett and his charges are just getting started.
“It certainly was a great feeling,” the Jets skipper said.
“If you had have said to me at the start of the day that we would have rolled them for under 100 we would have taken that every day of the week, but I probably would have laughed at you for thinking we'd do that to a strong batting line-up like Katandra's.”
Currently fifth on the table, the Jets need another victory to push for a top three spot and increase their hopes of a double chance if week one of the finals does not go their way.
“We finished fourth last year and were lucky enough to get the second chance, not that we made the most of it, but you want to finish as high as you can and get that double chance if you need it,” Brett said
“Our bowling has been our linchpin since we returned to A-grade really, but come finals if you don't make many runs you don't win many games.
“We need 200-250 on the board and we've got the batting line-up to do it, it's just about getting it to click.
“This week will be a good dress rehearsal for finals, so hopefully we can spend plenty of time at the crease.”
As they showed last week though, the Jets have the bowling attack to win from anywhere — led by Brett's brother Joel's career best year with ball in hand.
“He's got in the A-grade comp something like 36 wickets at about 9, those are extraordinary numbers really, you don't see that too often,” Mitch said.
“There's not much more you can ask for, he's a pleasure to captain.”
The Students are seventh, but need an outright win and results to go their way to taste finals action, but last round's triumph against incumbent Nagambie will give the outfit plenty of confidence.
