Member for Ovens Valley Tim McCurdy has been charged with multiple counts of fraud and has stepped down from the Opposition front bench.
The Nationals MP has been charged with four counts of making a false document, four counts of use a false document, attempting to obtain property by deception and obtaining property by deception.
The charges relate to an investigation into a 2009 alleged fraud.
Mr McCurdy said the property sale in question was conducted before he entered Parliament, when he was a real estate agent.
“I am innocent of these allegations and I await the opportunity to defend myself in court and clear my name,” he said.
“I will not be making further comment about the charges or allegations ahead of the court appearance.”
Mr McCurdy will appear at Shepparton Magistrates’ Court on April 24.
