Avenel pacer Higherthananeagle shattered the track record in a pillar-to-post victory in the time-honoured $25000 George Croxford Tribute for three-year-olds at Cobram on Monday.

Avenel pacer Higherthananeagle shattered the track record in a pillar-to-post victory in the time-honoured $25000 George Croxford Tribute for three-year-olds at Cobram on Monday.

The three-year-old daughter of the recently dead sire Mach Three was driven to victory by her trainer David Aiken, who was having his first drive on the filly.

Higherthananeagle, who was equal favourite at $3.10 with the Mark Pitt-trained and driven Shez All Rock, broke the hearts of her chasers with a blistering 26.9 final quarter and a scorching 1:55.1 mile for the 2170m trip.

Cuttheattitude set the previous track record in May 2010.

Higherthananeagle left her rivals stranded over the concluding stages of the race with Shez All Rock finishing nearly 14m astern, with the roughie Cullens Legend filling the minor placing.

Higherthananeagle’s win completed a big few days for her owner Kevin Riseley, who is also part owner of Saturday night’s Hunter Cup winner, the mighty New Zealander Lazarus and also the fourth placegetter in that race Lennytheshark.

Riseley had spent up big at the Melbourne yearly sales on Sunday, buying a Somebeachsomewhere-Maid For You Lombo filly for $50000.

Byrneside horseman Damian Wilson took the driving honours at Cobram, which recognised former club presidents and stalwarts, with a double.

Wilson won on a recent new stable addition Leakys Smokin, a 10-year-old who prevailed in the Terry Daniel Pace for C4-C6 class pacers and then partnered the Ron Calleja-trained pacer Ismaha to complete a hat-trick of wins on the track.

Ismaha had won at the past two Cobram meetings on January 7 and 18.

Punters did not make a good start to the meeting with Invergordon pacer Bensonfire taking the honours in the opening event for trainer-driver Stuart Govers.

Bensonfire was a 38-1 shot on the tote and rolled the two fancied runners Runfortheroses and Will be Doc in the Jim Cox Memorial Pace for C1 class pacers.
