Tungamah travelled to Katamatite on Saturday to take on a fellow top 4 aspirant in what was a highly anticipated contest. It was the first time since 2017 the close rivals have met and as per tradition, they battled it out for the Boosey Cup.
The home side started well kicking the first 2 goals of the game. Tungamah then steadied and got the game back on even terms taking a slender 1-point lead into the first change.
The second term was the Bears best of the day and they gained the ascendancy around the stoppages and started to get some good looks in front of goal.
Veteran Jeremy O’Brien must have forgotten to shower during the week as no one wanted to go near him in the first half. He found plenty of space in the forward half, kicked a goal and had a hand in a number of others to be one of the most influential players on the ground.
He was getting plenty of supply from wingers Ryan Einsporn, who was playing his first game for the club and young gun Des O’Kane who both won plenty of contested ball and were using it well. Tungamah slammed on 5 goals to 2 for the quarter to take a handy 21-point lead into half time.
The 3rd term saw a complete reversal in form from both sides, the Tigers upped their intensity level, while Tungamah’s dropped.
Katty were able to get some momentum and scored 5 goals for the term, while the Bears could only manage 3 points, margin 6 points at the last break.
Coach Stevenson urged his team to give one final effort and continue their good form in last quarters.
With a couple of rotations down for both sides the last quarter was a battle of wills, with plenty of grit and determination being shown by both outfits.
Tungamah’s conversion rate in front of goal has been poor all season and this was the game that it caught up with them. They were able to get the game back on their terms but could only manage 1 goal 6 for the quarter.
The Tigers kicked 1 goal 1 for the term to hang on by the barest of margins and take home the Boosey Cup for the first time since 2012. Dylan Scott continued his fine season at half back, providing plenty of rebound and winning countless one on one contests to be Tungamah’s best. Captain Angus Ford played a great game at centre half back, hardly losing a contest and organising the other defenders.
Nick Irvine and Matt O’Kane were the most prominent midfielders, while Nick Lawless kicked 5 goals up forward.
Both sides will look a little different in coming weeks as some key personnel return from injury and they are sure to meet again in the finals.
Next week sees the Bears host Jerilderie in front of past players, sponsors, and a number of reunions. It should be a great day at the Bear Pit.
Awards: Hard Luck – Des O’Kane, Thyme For Coffee – Jeremy O’Brien, Club Mulwala – Dylan Scott, Wingates – Ryan Einsporn and SM Massage – Matt O’Kane.
Reserves
Katamatite 1.4.10 defeated by Tungamah 12.13.85.
The day started well for injured captain Matt ‘oil painting’ Powell, who thought the game was being played at Tungamah and drove to Tunga rather than to the nicely presented Katty oval.
The team welcomed Chris Jones back in the ruck, who gave first use of the footy to onballers Matt Bourke who dominated the game, supported well by Shane Thomson, Corey Bourke, and Alan annoying whistling Richardson.
The backline was solid throughout the day led by Brayden Beaton, Brandon Fitzpatrick, Nick Gamble and Ned Connell.
Ben ‘son of a gun’ Griffin was letting nothing past him at full back. Up forward goals were shared around by Chris Johnstone, Ben Irvine and Jake Henderson who snagged 2 goals each.
Tom Lidgerwood again played a good game including a courageous mark, and great score involvements with teammates.
Jack Clarke, Mitch Goldman, Gus Heslin and Josh Bozzola were good contributors throughout the game.
In the end the Bears had another solid win 12.13 v 1.4, which puts Tungamah 2nd on the ladder, with a catch-up game up their sleeve.
Things are looking promising for this group, spots in the team will be tough to get come finals time, with so many senior injured players returning in the coming weeks.
Thanks to Luke ‘sparky’ Brennan who was a late inclusion as field umpire, both umps did a great job in a hotly contested game of ressies footy.

Thirds
Katamatite 17.9.111 defeated Tungamah 2.8-20.
The Tigers greeted the Bears with a lovely sunny morning after the fog lifted. Once again, Tungamah were slow out of the blocks and gave Katty a 7-goal head start.
Hard to plug the holes when they are playing 14 a side on the ground. The backline was working overtime and the second and third quarters were the Bears best where they managed to hold the Tigers to 3 goals and scored 2 themselves both by Jacko Purtell.
Judd Goldman almost got his first goal for the year, but it just fell short and Jacko cleaned it up and scored.
Beau Cummins dominated in the ruck and Tom Costigan had another solid game.
Katty got away in the last quarter and blew the score out. Another tough day out for the Bears but they look forward to the remaining games to maybe pick up a win or two.

Fourths
Katamatite 4.4-28 defeated by Tungamah 8.4-52.
The 4ths headed to Katty this week. The boys got off to a slow start in the first quarter but there was no stopping them after that.
The 2nd quarter started well with superstar Jake kicking 3 goals in 5 minutes.
From then on, the boys played a good consistent game of footy. A great team effort.

Fifths
With big numbers from both clubs a full game with 20 a side was played.
The mini-Bears played well considering you couldn’t see from one end of the field to the other due to fog.
All players should be proud of the improvement that is being seen on the field as well as the sportsmanship between clubs and the big cubs looking out for the little cubs.

A Grade
Katamatite 37 defeated Tungamah 30.
B grade
Katamatite 31 defeated by Tungamah 43.
Although the score shows the Bears winning by a comfortable margin it wasn’t any easy game.
Katy came out firing and with accurate shooting they took the lead at the end of the first quarter.
The defensive pressure became more intense in the second quarter with Tungamah’s attacking end leading the charge to pressure every ball and give the defenders every chance at turnovers.
It’s always good to see GS in Kara Lawless getting intercepts in the attacking third.
The third quarter was a little flat but with the commitment to winning the ball the Bears kept Katy to just 5 goals for the quarter.
Tunga could see they were starting to tire and that the Bears just needed to keep the pressure on.
A really strong last quarter saw Tungamah finish with another win. With each game the Bears are seeing some fantastic passages of play and really good support for each other across the court.
Awards: Players player - Kara Lawless - Miss Dolly, Coaches award - Ella Costigan - TFNC voucher.
C Grade
Katamatite 36 defeated by Tungamah 40.
Coming into finals the pressure is on, the team knew this was a must win game.
The Bears had a few rogue passes in the first half, but the defensive pressure kept Tungamah in front. The girls did well to keep a 3-goal lead at the end of both first and second quarter.
Katty came out strong in the third not missing a single shot. Tungamah were down by 2 goals at the end of the third quarter, Leanne gave the girls a pep talk and asked everyone to prove they deserve to be on the quart.
From the sidelines the Bears felt the intensity lift as the girls fought it out coming back to level scores and it was goal for goal until Mariah grabbed a much-needed intercept and threw it into an open ring for Steph to score a goal to put the Bears back in front.
The team really backed each other up and put pressure over every ball. Everyone was deserving of an award and have earnt their spot on the court!

Under 15s
Katamatite 14 defeated by Tungamah 31.
It was a very cold morning for the under 15 girls, but they were prepared to give it their all. Despite starting the warmup with a few sloppy passes, once it came game time the girls switched on creating lots of good passages of play.
Very impressed with the defensive pressure the girls with hands constantly over the ball to slow the play down and creating many turnovers.
The attackers are also working well moving around ring, working their hardest to get that front position.
The girls should be very happy with their much-needed win!
Awards: Tunga canteen – Shylee, Crusty loaf – Marney and Ricky Ds – Bridie.
Under 13s
Katamatite 12 defeated by Tungamah 16.
Thanks to Debbie for umpiring the game this week. The Tungamah girls took on a taller side, but they didn’t let that damper their motivation and determination to win.
Lilli played her best game of the season as she kept on her player and provided a very strong defence.
Emily B continued with her strong defensive tactics and held her ground with her opponent.
Jaz unfortunately had to leave the court sick but still made an impact while on the court. Charli was fierce on the court and fought for all lose balls and caused many turnovers.
Brooke was an option in the ring and held well to get the pass near the ring.
Elli played a great game in GA and was a little pocket rocket and lead within the ring to get the pass and shoot many goals.
Abbi lead and re-lead all game and was able to create space midcourt.
Em C was always an option in the midcourt and Milli moved to create space midcourt.
Awards: Players award McDonalds- Lilli, McDonalds- Charli and Crust Loaf- Abbi.

It was mini’s day where the Under 11s netball team are celebrated.
Thank you to Katamatite for putting on a party after the game to congratulate the Minis on being awesome.
It was fantastic to see Tungamah’s Under17s team supporting the junior netballers from the sidelines, you may not realise this but the mini bears love seeing you there.
The girls played a fantastic game, Coach Deb has been working on intercepting the ball and every player performed a clean intercept during the game.
Congratulations to Molly, Kiera, Chaye, Billie, Paige, Chloe, Poppy, Grace, Izzy and Ava on being an amazing team.
