A FUNERAL service for Jason McCormick, the victim of a hit run fatality in Darwin on New Year’s Eve, will be held in Kyabram this Friday.
The service for the 45-year-old former Kyabram man and Kyabram and Merrigum footballer is at the Moody funeral parlour in Albion St, Kyabram, at 11am. His body was transported back to his home town at the weekend, and will be cremated.
Following Friday’s service there will be a send off at the Kyabram Learning Centre.
Jason’s father John and brother Troy attended a send off for Jason at the Winellie Hotel on the Stuart Hwy south of Darwin last Friday night where friends and acquaintances of the popular man gave him a fitting farewell.
He was killed near the hotel.
‘‘There were heaps of people there and obviously he had made a lot of friends in the 15 years he had lived in Darwin,’’ John said.
‘‘I met people from Kyabram and Lancaster who were there to pay their respects. It was a really great night and Troy thanked everyone who attended.’’
Jason was a star junior footballer with Kyabram Football Club’s Under 18s and won their best and fairest award in 1987. After his Kyabram days he played with Merrigum Football Club in the Kyabram District Football League and alongside his brothers Troy and Shane was a member of the Bulldogs’ 1990 premiership winning side.
