In an effort to educate youngsters on the joys of fishing, Numurkah Fishing Club recently held a mammoth fishing tackle giveaway.
Vice-president Bryan Hanna said the giveaway was a roaring success.
``Things went so well we even had one kid change his shirt and come back for a second go,'' Mr Hanna said.
``We gave away 100 showbags promoting fishing, and we also had 12 major prizes. Kathryn Pryde from Numurkah won the major prize, a Pen rod and reel valued at $120.''
Mr Hanna said the fishing club had a few dollars to spare, and thanks to the generous help of a few sponsors including Trelly's, BCF, Numurkah Sports store, Abbots supply and DPI, they were able to give the kids a good introduction to fishing.
``We have 60 members in our club ranging in age from five to 90,'' he said.
``There is more to fishing then just catching fish _ it's also about mateship and we wanted to encourage the kids to do other things.''
The club meets every month and runs competitions among its members, who travel to Yarrawonga, Deniliquin and all along Murray River with their trusty rods and reels.
``We recently went to Narrandera where they had a competition to catch a carp for a dollar,'' Mr Hanna said.
``We came back with $600 in prizes.''
Mr Hanna has seen a few fish in his 50 years of fishing, and his most memorable catch was a 17 kg (38 lb) cod a fair few years ago.
``We recently went out to the Murray and caught 90 cod, but not one of them was a keeper,'' he said with a laugh.
