City of Greater Shepparton Mayor Seema Abdullah said last year was a “big success” in terms of numbers.
“We had 32 events, with some 2000 people attending; it’s important for our seniors to be engaged with community matters and to enjoy themselves, and be active,” she said.
“That’s why the recommendation in yesterday’s council meeting was to note the achievements of last year’s festival and also to continue to support this event by allocating a budget of $5000 to this event.
“It’s all subject to the annual budget process — people can apply for a grant up to $500.”
Cr Abdullah said around one quarter of the Greater Shepparton population was more than 60 years old.
“You can understand that it means so much for this group of our population to ‘own the community spread’ and to be engaged and to enjoy all the activities,” she said.
“It gives an opportunity for different groups to organise events and council is fully supportive of these events.
“It’s good for their health and wellbeing.”
The Seniors Festival grants will be open for applications in April.
