Shepparton Police Detective Senior Constable Paul Van Emmerik said the man in his 20s was walking home down Jacobson St in Mooroopna at the time of the assault.
It is understood about 10.20 pm the man was approached by five males and one female.
“He was subsequently assaulted,” Sen Const Van Emmerik said.
“During the assault he had his mobile phone and wallet stolen.”
Sen Const Van Emmerik said the assault occurred at the intersection of Menzies St and Jacobson St.
He confirmed a crime scene was established at Jacobson St following the incident where a pair of black Adidas slides were located.
“Police believe the slides belong to one of the offenders,” Sen Const Van Emmerik said.
“It is believed the offenders ran south down Jacobson St following the incident and though the parkland onto Knight St.”
Following the assault the victim was treated by Ambulance personnel at the scene before being transported to Goulburn Valley Health for treatment.
A GV Health spokesperson confirmed the man presented to the Emergency Department with chest and back injuries and was discharged shortly after.
Sen Const Van Emmerik confirmed the victim's mobile phone and wallet had not yet been recovered.
