The Goulburn Valley Grammar School graduate celebrated the news after submitting the assessment piece as part of the VCE Studio Arts class.
Describing the news as “amazing”, Lucy said her portfolio would be assessed throughout December before successful applicants would be notified early next year.
“Essentially, my artwork comments on the emotions we experience as humans, and how we are complex creatures,” she said.
Lucy said she explored the theme of being human throughout unit three and four of the class.
“This theme encompassed the relationships we form with others, the environment and within ourselves. A key idea that I delved into was identity,” she said.
“My artwork, Me, challenges the value that society places on looks.”
Lucy’s piece reveals a triptych of self-portraits engraved on copper with oil paints.
“By engraving into the surface of the copper, I symbolically stripped back the layers of my existence, to show that worth comes from within,” Lucy said.
“The pattern I engraved represents my thoughts, through the high and lows of life, as well as the flow of emotions.“
Lucy said the arrangement of the portraits represented how she perceived herself the majority of the time.
“I arranged the portraits so that the joyful one was central; however, either side of this are the emotions, or insecurities, that occasionally weigh me down,” she said.
Top Arts 2020 celebrates the work of VCE Art and VCE Studio Arts students yearly at the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne.
