Truth of substance abuse

The media often stereotypes drug and alcohol use to be far greater among Aboriginal people.

But is substance misuse a bigger problem for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people than other Australians?

Drinking alcohol is well-entrenched in Australian society and many Australians also engage in drug abuse.

However, a greater percentage of non-Aboriginal Australians drink alcohol than Aboriginal Australians.

In fact, the 2001 National Drug Strategy Household Survey showed ``more Aboriginal Australians abstain from alcohol than non-Aboriginal Australians''.
