Rubber burnt in police pursuit

MELBOURNE: A 17-year-old suspected car thief and his passenger have survived a high-speed crash after a police chase in which the vehicle travelled 12 km on bare wheel rims.

Police say the driver had raced a Mazda 626 between 150 km/h and 190 km/h during the 55 km pursuit on Thursday evening from just outside Ballarat towards Melbourne.

The car had earlier been reported stolen in north-western Victoria and then spotted by police on the Western Fwy outside Ballarat.

Police cars caught up to the vehicle about 9.15 pm but the driver and his passenger, a girl of the same age, did not...
