Road Safety and TAC Minister Jaala Pulford made the announcement in Shepparton yesterday, which will see some of the most dangerous intersections improved across the Greater Shepparton, Benalla, Campaspe, Mitchell and Moira shires.
Ms Pulford said the upgrades were being rolled out under the first round of the state government’s $25million investment which will see more than 200 high-risk rural intersections improved.
‘‘These are intersections that have been chosen because of their crash history or their design and these upgrades are about making sure people are aware that they’re entering into a riskier intersection — typically at high speeds with less than ideal visibility,’’ Ms Pulford said.
‘‘The kind of intersections you want a little bit more advanced warning of.’’
The identified intersections will receive a combination of safety improvements including upgraded advanced warning signs, new guide posts, updated linemarking and new hazard markers
Ms Pulford said the intersections had been selected based on safety records, difficulty caused by the intersection’s geometry and community feedback.
With six lives lost on Greater Shepparton roads so far this year, Ms Pulford said the upgrades were targeting local roads that people used every day.
‘‘A lot of these types of roads don’t have enormous amounts of traffic, they are roads that are a bit out of the way — they’re designated in that high-risk, high-speed category by their very nature,’’ she said.
The intersection upgrades will be delivered in two stages from now until mid-2020 and are part of the $1.4billion Towards Zero Action plan being delivered in partnership with the Transport Accident Commission and VicRoads.
