More than 14000 new look ballistic vests will be introduced to all uniform officers across the state in the next two years to replace current vests.
Acting Assistant Commissioner Nigel Howard said the new vests had been developed to improve officer safety and align with modern police work and technologies.
‘‘The new vests are lighter, allow for greater thermal management and improved freedom of movement with increased adjustability,’’ Assistant Comm Howard said.
‘‘We’ve also designed these vests to be future proofed by incorporating better integration with modern policing equipment such as the body worn cameras.’’
As well as a change from navy blue to black, Assistant Comm Howard said the new vets included safer and more streamlined access to equipment along with the ability to adapt to both warm and cold temperatures.
Victoria Police announced the $41million investment last week alongside Police and Emergency Services Minister Lisa Neville, who said the vests were developed in close consultation with frontline officers.
‘‘This is about providing a safer working environment for our dedicated police officers, while giving them better access to state-of-the-art crime fighting equipment,’’ Minister Neville said.
Protective Services Officers, Police Custody Officers, Highway Patrol members, Crime Scene Services and investigators will also be equipped with the new vests which were funded as part of the government’s $596million Public Safety Package.
