Emergency services were called to the scene on Merrigum-Ardmona Rd at 7.19 am this morning.
Shepparton Highway Patrol Senior Constable Darren Smith said the 34-year-old man was travelling east with a 20-year-old female passenger when he drifted off the road.
‘‘He’s drifted off the road approximately 100 metres back and collided with a tree side-on into the driver’s door.’’
An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said the driver was flown by air ambulance to the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, where he landed at about 9.45 am.
The spokesperson said the driver remained in a stable condition and would be treated for leg and pelvic injuries.Sen Const Smith said the passenger was assessed by paramedics and did not sustain any injuries as a result of the collision.
He said the cause was unknown at this stage, but he believed fatigue may have been a factor.
The road will remain closed until emergency services have cleared the scene.
