Earlier this year the council installed solar panels on the Mooroopna Hub and Doyles Rd Complex to continue its Energy Reduction Plan.
The solar panels on the Mooroopna Hub decreased the main grid’s electricity consumption by 42 per cent during the period from March to April and the Doyles Rd Complex had a 32 per cent reduction during the same period.
Council’s Sustainable Development director Geraldine Christou said the installation of the solar panels was just one of the steps council was taking to achieve its goals.
‘‘Council is consistently seeking paths to improve the environment we live in and to address climate change,’’ Ms Christou said.
The Energy Reduction Plan aims to achieve a 20 per cent reduction in council energy use by the year 2020.
Council has also installed solar panels on its Welsford St offices, and the Shepparton Sports Stadium to help achieve its goals.
Council’s Sustainability and Environment manger Greg McKenzie said Aquamoves and the city’s saleyards would also receive solar panels next year.
However, council’s large scale solar plans are still on hold.
The Lemnos, Tallygaroopna and Tatura East solar projects have been deferred until Victoria’s new solar farm guidelines are complete.
The new guidelines will aim to provide clear advice on establishing well-located, best-practice solar projects.
