The echo of continual howling carried kilometres as mushers and their four-legged friends approached the starting line at the 2019 Northern Victoria Sled Dog Classic.

The 29th annual three-day classic saw competitors unite once again for the country’s largest dry-land sled dog event for the year.

With 160 entries from across Australia and more than 700 dogs, safety officer Jess Winther said it was another great turn out.

‘‘It’s great to see so many out for it again this year,’’ she said.

‘‘Because we’re all from different states this is very social — most of us haven’t seen each other for about eight months, so we all love to catch up.’’

She said while many of the same people returned each year for the annual highlight, they were pleased to see newcomers attending for the first time.

‘‘We try to get some new people into the sport every year to come and enjoy it with the rest of us,’’ Ms Winther said.

She said the team was thrilled by the support of those who got on board and helped to make the event another great success.
