Students from every Cobram school attended the event, as well as Cobram-Barooga RSL members.
The ceremony included the planting of a commemorative garden by the families of the fallen soldiers — PTE.KL. Rose, GNR. R.I. Jordan, CPL. GJP. Goodman, FLT. SGT. HR. Shadforth.
Retired chief air marshal Leo Davies, who spent more than 40 years in the air force, said the day would help Cobram students reflect on Australia's history.
“This is the time for Australians to think of what our country would be like if our veterans hadn't fought — I think we owe them much more than one day,” he said.
“During my time in the air force, there were very few days where I didn't want to go to work, I had the chance to travel, work with a tremendous team and make a difference within the service.
“Australia has a wonderful navy, army and public service.”
Bonegilla's Army School of Health staff member Roger Derrick was the officer in charge of the catafalque party, made up of five trainees.
“We have a strong connection to Cobram and Barooga and we were honoured to participate in the service,” Mr Derrick said.
“This part of the world is synonymous with the first world war because so many of the first members came from this region, so we take the duty really seriously and are honoured to help school children understand what Anzac Day is all about.”
Victorian Association of State Secondary Principals John Richmond commended Cobram Secondary College principal Kimberley Tempest on organising the event.
“It's important that we know our history and know how lucky we are,” Mr Richmond said.
“These students here are lucky that they don't know what it's like to go to a war zone.
“Last year I was only seeing schools on zoom now it is great to meet people in person once again.”
Cobram local Rob Morey attended the ceremony and said he was proud of Cobram's youth.
“Anzac Day has always had a special place for me because my grandpa fought in WWI, my father fought in WWII and they are both gone, it's just a wonderful memory to know what they have done for this country is being represented by our local youth,” he said.
The ceremony was held on Friday, April 23.
