Tatura’s Angelo Torresan is calling on the whisky drinkers of the Goulburn Valley to form the region’s first Gillies Club.
The Gillies Club Australia is the oldest single-malt appreciation society outside of Scotland.
With 10 Gillies Club branches scattered across the country, Mr Torresan said the closest branch at the moment was in Melbourne and he hoped to see Goulburn Valley people come together to change that.
‘‘The club itself is all about camaraderie and getting people together, the whisky is only the tool to do that,’’ he said.
Mr Torresan said the club gatherings would aim to provide a relaxed environment of no rules or expectations.
‘‘It’s a club without rules, except for one directive and that is no-one’s allowed to drive home,’’ he said.
He said gatherings were simply a time of meeting, eating, enjoying each other’s company and assessing different whiskies.
‘‘We have lots of laughs — and we talk about all sorts of things, not just whisky,’’ he said.
Mr Torresan said the average Gillies gathering would be hosted by a different member of the group each time and would be organised roughly every three months.
