Twelve GOTAFE apprentices will be hanging up their sporting racquets and packing their hammers and scissors for Sydney this June to represent Victoria in the Tradie Olympics.

From July to October last year, the Regional WorldSkills Competitions were held at GOTAFE’s Shepparton and Wangaratta campuses across a variety of fields including Building, Automotive, Plumbing, Retail Baking Bread, Retail Baking Pastry, Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy.

Eleven gold medallists from GOTAFE successfully completed the selection process for the National Championships and will join the 86-strong team representing Victoria on the national stage in Sydney.

‘‘We are looking to help cover the costs of GOTAFE apprentices attending WorldSkills, so will be holding a number of fundraising activities throughout the northeast over the next couple of months,’’ GOTAFE project officer Callum Ross said.

‘‘We want everyone to get behind these competitors, it’s not everyday that someone from your town represents Victoria,’’ he said.

Three GOTAFE apprentices will be representing the Shepparton region in the upcoming WorldSkills National Championships.

Seventeen-year-old Josie Laulu Seiuli will be competing in the Vet Hairdressing field and is excited to find out what her tasks will be.

‘‘It’s a massive achievement for me, there’s a lot of real talent out there, and I was so surprised when they announced I had won and would be heading to Sydney,’’ Josie said.

Other representatives include Watters Electrical fourth-year apprentice Shaun Davis competing in the Electrical Installation field and Bright Eyes Hairdressing second year apprentice Hannah Wilson competing in the Hairdressing field.

Mr Davis and Ms Wilson both agreed it was an honour to be representing Shepparton Victoria in their chosen fields.

Held in Darling Harbour, Sydney, the WorldSkills National Championships will see 500 competitors aged 16-24 years representing 60 skills.

WorldSkills National Championships, ‘Skills Show Australia 2018’ will be held at ICC Darling Harbour, Sydney, from Saturday, June 2, to Monday, June 4. For more information, visit
